Kerala rains: Two killed, one injured as heavy rain triggers landslips across Idukki

Torrential rains triggered widespread damage and multiple landslips across Idukki district of Kerala on Sunday (September 20, 2026) evening, leaving two people dead and one seriously injured at Kottakkamboor near Vattavada.
A landslip reported at Pazhampillichal near Adimaly on Sunday night completely damaged one house, while debris inundated four other homes in the area. Revenue officials relocated five affected families to the Parishakkallu Lower Primary (LP) School in Adimaly. The road connecting Erumpupalam and Pazhampillichal was also damaged due to a mudslip, and the Munnar-Adimaly stretch of the Kochi-Dhanushkodi national highway witnessed isolated mudslips.
In Kottakkamboor, residents Balakrishnan and Chinnu died when a mudslip struck the temporary makeshift shed they were staying in. Balakrishnan’s wife, Mariyamma, sustained serious injuries. The victims’ bodies were shifted to the Adimaly Taluk Hospital.
In response to the severe weather, Idukki District Collector Dineshan Cheruvatt banned all adventure tourism activities and prohibited night travel in hilly areas until further notice. Isolated pockets across the district, particularly Adimaly, Vattavada, and Vagamon, recorded extremely heavy rainfall through Sunday evening.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob visited the Adimaly Taluk Hospital on Monday to pay his respects.
The Minister also convened a review meeting at Adimaly to assess the disaster response.
