Keralam government weighs proposal for UN University centre

The State government is exploring a proposal to establish a centre of the United Nations University (UNU), a global think tank and teaching organisation functioning under the United Nations.

According to government sources, the deliberations regarding the proposal are still in a nascent stage, with the plan yet to be taken up by the Cabinet for discussion.

While a prospective location for setting up the proposed centre is yet to be identified, it is envisaged with academic linkages with universities and research institutions in Keralam, officials said.

Headquartered in Tokyo, UNU focusses on capacity building through postgraduate programmes. The university presently has 13 institutes in 12 countries including China, Canada, Ghana, Malaysia, Germany, Portugal and Belgium.
