Klerksdorp man arrested after allegedly offering Hawks R10,000 bribe - IOL

A Nigerian national, who allegedly offered police a R3,000 bribe to withdraw his drug possession case, and a further R7,000 when it was done was charged with corruption in Gauteng.

Augustine Chinedu Onah, 42, a Nigerian national, who allegedly offered police a R10,000 bribe to withdraw his drug possession case, has been arrested and charged with corruption.

Onah appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrates' Court on Monday, facing corruption charges. His case was remanded to October 5, 2026, for a formal bail application.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DHawks) alleged that Onah contacted Hawks members to withdraw and close the drug-possession case being investigated against him.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Nkosinathi Ndlovu said that during the communication, Onah allegedly offered R10,000 as gratification.

An undercover operation was conducted, and Onah allegedly met with the members of the DPCI- Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, where he allegedly offered R3,000. He allegedly indicated he would pay the balance later.

“He was subsequently arrested and charged with corruption. The accused was arrested by the Klerksdorp-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit on Friday, September 25, 2026,” Ndlovu said.
