Kottarakkara native’s organs donated after brain death

Yet another deceased-donor organ donation was carried out in the State on Saturday after the family of Kottarakkara native G. Radhakrishnan Potti, 67, who was declared brain dead following a cerebral haemorrhage at KIMSHEALTH hospital, consented to donate his organs. Three major organs -- both kidneys and the liver -- as well as the skin and cornea were harvested.
While the liver and one of the kidneys were allocated to end-stage patients undergoing treatment at KIMSHEALTH hospital, the other kidney was allocated to an end-stage renal patient at Government Medical College Kottayam. Skin would be harvested and stored in the skin bank at Govt Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram while the cornea would be harvested by the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology here.
The police created a dedicated green corridor for the ambulance transporting the kidney by road from Thiruvananthapuram to GMC Kottayam.
Radhakrishna Potti, a retired Revenue department employee at Kollam Collectorate, had been admitted to KIMSHEALTH hospital following cerebral haemorrhage on September 21. However, brainstem death was declared on Friday evening, following which his wife and daughter informed their willingness for organ donation.
Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO) coordinated the organ recipient identification and organ allocation processes.
