Soon after a fresh round of talks between the Centre and civil society amalgams in Ladakh, the administration of the Lieutenant Governor, in another major outreach, announced a compensation of ₹15 lakh on Sunday (September 13, 2026) to the next of kin of those killed during the Leh street protests in September last year.

The administration also announced an ex-gratia of ₹3 lakh to those with major injuries and ₹1 lakh for minor injuries.

“As part of our continued commitment to support families affected by the tragic violence in Ladakh on 24 September last year, we sanctioned today a compensation of ₹15 lakh to the next of kin of each of the four deceased,” L-G Vinai Kumar Saxena said.

Ladakhi civil society groups, including Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), held talks with the Centre on September 9. There is a growing convergence between the Centre and the Ladakh groups, which had demanded compensation for the deceased.

The L-G said he was “deeply grateful to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his sensitive, humanitarian and guiding approach, and for standing in solidarity with the victims and their families”.

He said while no compensation amount can replace a life lost or erase the pain endured, the Ladakh Administration firmly stands beside every affected family in their journey towards healing and overcoming the grief.

Four civilians were killed and around 90 injured after security personnel allegedly opened fire on protesters in Leh on September 24 last year.

The Centre has already pledged tailor-made special provisions for Ladakh under Article 371, which will grant a legislature to the region.
