Five years after the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. and Western forces from Afghanistan, the Taliban remain in power, marking the end of a two-decade conflict that cost hundreds of thousands of lives and trillions of dollars. The U.S. withdrawal in August 2021 has since become a major turning point in global debates over Western military intervention, nation-building and the limits of foreign policy.
