Bodycam footage shows a Leawood police officer following the leashed dog down the street to a garage where its owner had been on the floor for hours.

A Kansas dog is being hailed by police as a "loyal companion" after it sought help for its owner who had fallen and was unable to get up.

The Leawood Police Department released bodycam footage showing an officer first encountering the dog in the middle of the road while patrolling a residential neighborhood.

"The officer noticed the dog was on a leash, but there was no owner in sight," police said.

Video showed the dog barking at the officer. The officer replied to the dog, "Hi, why don’t you go on back home?"

Bodycam footage showed the officer following the dog up a driveway, where another dog had emerged.

"Is this where you live?" the officer asked the dogs.

After spotting the resident, the officer said, "Hi, are you OK?"

"Thanks to the resident’s loyal companion, our officer was able to find them and get them the help they needed," police said. "The resident was treated by medical personnel and is now recovering safely at home."
