The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Wednesday said it is drafting a memorandum order that could lead to the revocation of the driver’s license of motorists involved in pedestrian lane-related incidents.

LTO chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao told GMA News that the move stemmed from numerous incidents in which pedestrians died while crossing the designated lanes.

Motorists were also caught on video failing to slow down or yield to pedestrians, according to the LTO.

In a 24 Oras report from Vonne Aquino on Wednesday, there have been several incidents where a person was walking on the right lane, yet they were still struck by a speeding vehicle.

(We are just passing it through legal to smooth everything out but hopefully one of these days we will finish it and then we will publish it.)

Lacanilao said the revocation of licenses will go through due process.

(They will be given due process to explain but it will be revoked… What I want to happen is not just when someone dies, but when you hit someone. If you get hit on the pedestrian lane by a driver, the license should be revoked.)

Several pedestrians agreed with this proposed rule.

(Some vehicles still do not stop, I have to be the one that stops, I would just let him pass even if I am the one crossing.)

However, some drivers asked the LTO for a deeper probe.

(We are in favor, ma’am, but there should be a deeper investigation first before the license gets revoked because the driver might lose his livelihood.) —with a report from EJ Gomez/Joviland Rita/Jean Mangaluz/KG/RF, GMA News
