Malaysian ex-PM Mahathir hospitalized after wife's death

Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has been hospitalized following the death of his wife earlier this week.

Mahathir's spokesperson said the 101-year-old former premier was admitted to the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur for observation on Tuesday. On Monday, he had attended the funeral of his wife, Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, who died aged 100.

One of Mahathir's sons told state-run Bernama news agency that Mahathir had been stressed following her death and the funeral. But he added that his father's condition is stable and there is no cause for concern.

Mahathir was Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister and is known for modernizing the country during his more than 20 years in office. He has been hospitalized on several occasions in recent years. The last time was in January after he fractured a hip in a fall.
