Man from Tarakan Found Dead in Detention Bathroom After Imprisonment for Abusing His Mother

TARAKAN, KOMPAS.com – A male detainee, SRS (42), a resident of Tarakan City, North Kalimantan, was found dead in the bathroom of the West Tarakan Police Station detention room on Wednesday morning (16/9/2026).

Acting Head of Public Relations for the North Kalimantan Regional Police, AKBP Erwin Manik, confirmed the incident.

Erwin explained that SRS was reported by his biological mother, SN (65), due to his repeated physical abuse towards her.

"Based on statements obtained by investigators, SN reported experiencing alleged abuse three times. In the first incident, SN was reportedly struck on the face; during the second, she suffered a blow to the back of the head. In the third incident, SRS allegedly threw a bottle at SN, causing bruising," Erwin elaborated in a press release on Sunday (20/9/2026).

Responding to SRS's death, his mother expressed acceptance and peace with her son's passing.

SN also declared that she would neither press charges nor hold the police responsible for SRS's death.

"This statement was formalized in a letter dated September 17, 2026, and has been submitted to the police," Erwin added.

Despite the family's willingness to forgo legal action and demands, the Professional and Security Division (Propam) of the North Kalimantan Regional Police continues to investigate the entire sequence of events during SRS's detention until his death.

The investigation also aims to thoroughly uncover the circumstances and events leading up to SRS being found deceased.

"Currently, the investigation is ongoing to explore the strong suspicion of suicide, as stated by police authorities," Erwin said.

According to police records, SN reported SRS on Saturday (12/9/2026), and he was detained starting Sunday (13/9/2026).

The report was processed by the police, and SRS was subsequently held at the West Tarakan Police Station.

However, three days later, on Wednesday morning (16/9/2026), SRS was discovered dead in the detention room's bathroom.
