Man shot and wounded by immigration officer in Austin

A federal immigration officer reportedly shot and wounded a man in Austin, Texas, early Sunday afternoon during the latest instance of government violence allegedly tied to President Donald Trump's mass deportation campaign.

The unidentified victim was rushed to a hospital where he was alert and talking, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

Photographs taken at the scene show a dark blue Toyota Corolla with damage along its passenger side and what appear to be two bullet holes in the rear window.

"Austin police officers were not involved in the situation and we do not know what led to the incident," city officials reportedly said in an email to Austin City Council members.

The Austin Police Department referred an inquiry from The Independent to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which didn't immediately respond.

In a statement posted on social media, Democratic Rep. Greg Casar of Texas said, “The horror has come to our city: ICE has shot a person in Austin this morning.”

“As the facts emerge, I am demanding a full, independent investigation, immediate release of the body camera footage, and accountability for any ICE officer who broke the law,” Casar said. “Over and over, ICE has shot people and then lied about what happened. We can see the lies with our own eyes. We will demand truth, transparency and accountability.”
