Massive Ukrainian drone attack hits Moscow on last day of Russian elections
A large-scale overnight drone attack on Moscow by Ukraine killed at least two people and damaged a major oil refinery, Moscow’s regional governor Andrey Vorobyov said Sunday — the last day of voting in Russia’s parliamentary elections.
“Overnight, the Moscow Region was subjected to a massive drone attack,” said Vorobyov, adding that 400 people had been evacuated from an apartment building.
Sergei Sobyanin, the city’s mayor, said more than 1,600 drones were intercepted and shot down, with 450 of them headed for the Russian capital. “The biggest attack by enemy drones has been repelled,” he said on Telegram. “This unprecedented attack was clearly planned with the aim of disrupting the elections. The enemy did not succeed.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed attacks had been carried out against infrastructure facilities in and around Moscow. “Our long-range responses had a very significant impact in the Moscow region last night. One of Russia’s key oil industry facilities and the aggressor’s logistics facility were hit,” he said on X.
Russian voters have been heading to the polls this weekend in the first parliamentary elections since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ruling United Russia party is expected to retain its dominance in the parliament and present the win as proof of public support for the war in Ukraine.
“Your choice, and your will, will once again demonstrate that millions of people stand behind our soldiers, that we are a united people bound together by shared values, historical memory, and love for our homeland, and that no one will succeed in dividing or intimidating us,” Putin said in a televised address before the vote.
On Saturday, Ukrainian officials said three children and a woman had died in Russian attacks on the Vyshgorod district of Kyiv. Regional Governor Tymur Tkachenko said Sunday a child who was injured in Saturday’s attack had died in hospital.
