The off-duty Mfuleni cop accused of shooting dead two men during an alleged domestic dispute in Blue Downs has now been charged with two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and illegal possession of ammunition.
Keegan Petersen made his first appearance in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
Western Cape NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said on Tuesday: “The State alleges that he fatally shot his girlfriend’s brother and the man he was with and attempted to kill three others, including his girlfriend.”
According to the State, police later found four shotgun rounds in a safe at Petersen’s home.
Ntabazalila said more charges could still be added as the investigation continues.
It is understood that Petersen’s lawyer on Tuesday asked that he be returned to the holding cells at Mfuleni Police Station. The court denied the request and ruled that he be kept at Pollsmoor Prison until his next appearance.
The two men killed in the shooting have been identified as Leando Fortuin and Wesley Carolissen.
The incident happened on Saturday evening in Velvet Crescent, where Petersen allegedly opened fire after his girlfriend alerted her family during a domestic dispute.
A family member previously said that Fortuin and Carolissen had gone to the house after being asked to fetch Petersen’s girlfriend.
The witness claimed Petersen opened the door and “immediately started shooting at them”.
Petersen, is believed to be stationed at Mfuleni SAPS, reportedly handed himself over at Kleinvlei Police Station on Sunday.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed that it was investigating the shooting.
Outside court on Tuesday, family members of Fortuin and Cornelissen staged a peaceful demonstration, holding placards calling for justice for the two murdered men.
Petersen’s case was postponed to October 6, 2026 for a bail application.
Ntabazalila said the State would oppose bail under Schedule 6 of the Criminal Procedure Act.
