Minnesota fans storm field after beating Michigan, troll Wolverines with 'Mr. Brightside' - USA Today
It's been a long time since Minnesota fans have been able to celebrate a Little Brown Jug victory over Michigan on their home turf.
Nearly 50 years, to be exact. The Golden Gophers' last home win over Michigan was in 1977.
All of that pent-up anticipation was unleashed Saturday at Huntington Bank Stadium when the clock hit triple zeros and the Golden Gophers rallied to defeat the Wolverines, snapping a 12-year overall drought in the rivalry series. The dramatic comeback victory sparked an immediate celebration, with Minnesota fans storming the field to commemorate the long-awaited win.
The field storm wasn't the only form of celebration from the Gophers. Minnesota hit "Sweet Caroline" at the buzzer and then played "Mr. Brightside" down on the field as the field storm was taking place, two popular songs that are played at Michigan Stadium during Wolverines home games.
"Besides my marriage and my kids being born, this might be the best day of my life!" Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck said on Fox's broadcast after the game.
Trailing going into the fourth quarter, Drake Lindsey led Minnesota on back-to-back scoring drives to mount its come-from-behind win, both of which were sparked by interceptions thrown by Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood. The first drive ended with a 26-yard field goal, while the second ended with Lindsey throwing a 3-yard touchdown pass.
The Gophers sealed the win by forcing a turnover on downs on defense at the end of the game.
It remains unclear whether Minnesota will receive any kind of punishment, financial or otherwise, from the Big Ten for its fans storming the field after the Golden Gophers beat Michigan on Saturday.’
Unlike the SEC and ACC, the Big Ten doesn’t have an escalating fine system in place for member schools for incidents in which their fans storm the field. A 2024 ESPN story on court-storming noted that the conference has a policy in place in which a “discretionary fine can result on a third offense for failure to ‘provide adequate security for visiting teams from their arrival for a game through their departure.’”
In a statement in request for comment from USA TODAY Sports, the conference said, "We have a game management policy in place that host institutions must provide adequate security and protection for the visiting team and officials immediately upon arrival on campus continuing through their departure. If that policy is violated, there are levels of punishment including a discretionary fine."
At several points in the past, the league declined to take action against a school whose fans took to the gridiron to celebrate. After Minnesota upset USC in 2024, for instance, the Golden Gophers were not fined, with the conference instead issuing a statement saying that “the safety and security of student-athletes, coaches and staff is of utmost importance."
