Navy says 4 injured in 'mishap' during aircraft recovery operations - USA Today

Four shipboard personnel were injured on Sept. 28 after a "mishap" occurred during aircraft recovery operations aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower off the Virginia coast, the U.S. Navy said.

The incident happened at about 6:18 p.m. ET while the carrier was conducting aircraft recovery operations, the Navy said in a statement. During the incident, two aviators assigned to Carrier Air Wing 3 ejected from their aircraft and were quickly rescued by search-and-rescue personnel.

Both aviators were safely returned to the ship and were being evaluated by medical personnel, according to the Navy.

The four injured shipboard personnel were receiving medical treatment. One sailor was being transported to a hospital in the Norfolk area with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, the Navy said.

The Navy did not identify the type of aircraft involved or provide details about what led to the mishap. It did not immediately provide additional information on the condition of the injured personnel or the status of the aircraft.

USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, is a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier that conducts operations in support of U.S. naval missions around the world. USNI News reported that the carrier began early carrier qualification operations following the completion of its most recent repair period in July and departed from Naval Station Norfolk on the afternoon of Sept. 28.
