NDLEA busts Nigerian-Mexican cartel’s transnational meth lab - The Guardian Nigeria News

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory operated by a Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel in Eziama community, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State. According to a statement by the agency’s Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, during the intelligence-driven operation, operatives arrested two kingpins: 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, alias Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday.

The duo allegedly partnered with Rodriguez Villanueva, a notorious Mexican cartel member who is currently at large. The suspects have since been arraigned before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court in Enugu on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, managing a drug trafficking organisation, and the unlawful possession of precursor chemicals.

Following an application for an accelerated hearing, the judge scheduled the trial for October 21, 2026. Investigations by the NDLEA’s Special Operations Unit tracked the suspects’ movements across Lagos, Enugu, and Anambra states before operatives raided the Obeagu compound. The statement noted that a search yielded vast quantities of chemicals, including 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, and 414 kilogrammes of lead acetate, alongside improvised distillation apparatus. A related search at a family residence yielded eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, dehydrators, and 11 kilogrammes of ephedrine, underscoring the massive scale of the cartel’s operations.

Reacting to the successful sting, NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Marwa (retd), commended the officers and reaffirmed the agency’s unwavering resolve to apprehend all fleeing suspects, including two other accomplices named in the charge. Marwa said, “The Enugu lab bust is further proof that Nigeria will not be allowed to become a haven for transnational drug cartels.” He warned that the agency’s international partnerships would continue to close every loophole exploited by drug barons, charging personnel to sustain relentless enforcement until the nation is completely rid of illicit drug production and trafficking.
