The New York Giants are signing wide receiver Dalen Cambre to the 53-man roster from the practice squad, reports Art Stapleton of The Record.

The move fills the opening created when the team released veteran Darius Slayton earlier this week, leaving New York with 52 players.

Cambre becomes the fifth wide receiver on the active roster, joining Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields, Darnell Mooney and Odell Beckham Jr. The former undrafted free agent out of Louisiana had a strong summer as both a receiver and special teamer before being waived at the final cutdown and quickly re-signed to the practice squad.

Last season, Cambre appeared in seven games for the Giants, almost exclusively on special teams. Head coach John Harbaugh took notice of him in camp, pointing to daily circus catches, sharp route running and consistent coverage work. Cambre caught all seven of his preseason targets for 79 yards.

The promotion comes with a pay bump and gives the Giants flexibility as they sort through game-day actives and inactives for Sunday night’s opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

Nabers’ availability remains part of those calculations.
