Senior BJP leader and Member of Parliament (MP) Tarun Chugh on Saturday (October 3, 2026) said the Statehood resolution passed by the Omar Abdullah government was an “eyewash”, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi had already promised Statehood for J&K and remains committed”.
Speaking in Jammu after reviewing organisational matters along with BJP national general secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santosh, Mr. Chugh termed the recent resolution passed by the J&K Assembly as “an attempt by the NC to divert attention from people’s issues”.
“There was no need for a resolution on Statehood. It was done to merely create a shield for NC and Congress’ falling popularity among the people. Statehood has been promised by PM Modi in the Lok Sabha and remains committed to it,” said Mr. Chugh.
On the NC referring to the 2000 autonomy resolution, Mr Chugh asked the NC to “refrain from parroting separatist politics”. “Separatist politics will not attend to the population’s dire needs. J&K is not anymore J&K of the 1990s. Instead of answering people on its failure on development, promises and manifesto, the NC instead is playing resolution games,” said Mr. Chugh.
Mr. Chugh said he wants to remind Mr. Abdullah who was responsible for all the pain and loot in Kashmir. He said the BJP was growing in J&K and “people were joining it”. “The BJP is about safeguarding nationalism,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mr. Santosh chaired a meeting with BJP legislators in Jammu and reviewed the party’s functioning.
