Nolan Smith explains why he will not tear down Titans QB Cam Ward

Nolan Smith heard Jeffery Simmons’ comments about Jalen Hurts, but the Philadelphia Eagles linebacker has no interest in escalating the conversation before Sunday’s matchup with the Tennessee Titans. Simmons drew attention after saying Tennessee must contain Hurts’ running ability and “make him be a quarterback.” When asked about Titans quarterback Cam Ward, Smith referenced the remark before taking a different approach.

“I ain’t gonna do what they did,” Smith said. “Cam Ward is a great quarterback. ... We’ve got to bring our best foot forward every game.”

Ward completed 19 of 32 passes for 140 yards and one touchdown during Tennessee’s season-opening loss to the New York Jets. He was also sacked three times, but his arm talent and mobility remain concerns for Vic Fangio’s defense.

Smith made it clear he knew what Simmons had said about Hurts. He also explained why he wouldn't respond with personal criticism.

“Everybody got phones, everybody got social media,” Smith said. “I’m not a big tearing people down type of a person, man. You never know what somebody is going through personally in life.”

Smith’s response acknowledged the perceived slight without adding another inflammatory quote to the matchup. His larger point was that Philadelphia cannot dismiss Ward because Tennessee’s offense struggled in Week 1. The Eagles struggled to contain Jayden Daniels during Washington’s final two possessions. Ward presents a similar challenge because he can escape pressure and extend plays outside the pocket.

Philadelphia’s priority will be generating pressure without creating running lanes. Smith may have declined to engage in a war of words, but his responsibility on Sunday will be ensuring Ward cannot change the conversation with his performance.
