Packers signing veteran OL Cordell Volson to practice squad - Packers Wire

In the aftermath of the Week 1 meltdown along the offensive line, the Green Bay Packers are adding experienced competition at guard ahead of Sunday's showdown with the New York Jets. According to Bill Huber of Packers on SI, the Packers signed former Cincinnati Bengals guard Cordell Volson to the team's practice squad on Thursday.

Volson was a fourth-round pick out of North Dakota State in the 2022 draft. The Bengals selected him four picks ahead of Zach Tom (now Zach Bako-Bewele), and Volson went on to start 48 games at guard over his first three seasons in Cincinnati. He missed the 2025 season because of a shoulder injury, signed with the Tennessee Titans to start 2026 and was released at final roster cutdowns last month.

Volson, who had a workout in Green Bay on Wednesday, was practicing with the team on Thursday. The Packers had an open spot on the practice squad, so no corresponding roster move was required.

Volson has played over 3,000 career snaps at left guard during regular season games, but he's also played right guard during the preseason. In fact, he was on the field for 73 snaps at right guard for the Titans during the preseason. While his pass protection issues were rather glaring in Cincinnati, the Packers are clearly desperate for experience at guard while Aaron Banks manages a knee injury and after watching Donovan Jennings and Jacob Monk struggle so mightily in the season opener. Volson will join undrafted rookies Josh Gesky and Dillon Wade as the guards on the practice squad.

More than likely, Volson will need time to learn the offense before he is a realistic candidate to be elevated from the practice squad as a backup option. Is he going to be a savior for the offensive line? Most likely not, but it's possible he could work his way into the mix if the current offensive linemen continue to struggle to start 2026.

Based on practice footage on Thursday, Volson will wear No. 72 with the Packers.
