PAGASA: Habagat may end in first week of October - GMA Network
State weather bureau PAGASA said Thursday that the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, which brings rain mainly to the western parts of the country, is expected to end in the first week of October.
PAGASA weather specialist Leanne Loreto said the end of the Habagat season, which began on May 30, will usher in a transition period leading to the onset of the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan.
Loreto said the Amihan season could begin by the end of October.
"When we have the Amihan, the air is generally dry and cool. However, since we are currently experiencing El Niño, temperatures may not be as cold as those we experienced in previous years," she said in her weather report.
Loreto also said one or two tropical cyclones could develop or enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in October, with historical data showing a higher likelihood of landfall in Luzon or the Visayas.
Other weather systems that could affect the Philippines in October include the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), easterlies, and low pressure areas, Loreto said.
"The current El Niño may affect the frequency and behavior of weather systems and tropical cyclones," PAGASA said. — VBL, GMA News
