Penn State, SMU lead winners of college football bowl projections after Week 2 - USA Today

Week 2 was always going to bring changes to the College Football Playoff picture. That was the reality with No. 1 Ohio State and No. 3 Texas facing each other and another big showdown matching No. 10 Oklahoma and No. 24 Michigan.

What we didn't expect was another huge impact coming from Oregon. The Ducks were shocked by Oklahoma State, putting their locked position in the playoff field in jeopardy. They join Oklahoma as teams in trouble after the Sooners fell to Michigan ahead of difficult games against Georgia and Texas in the next four weeks.

This week's bowl projections move Oregon and Oklahoma out of the field. Rising into CFP position are SMU and Penn State with the Mustangs poised to be a second team from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Nittany Lions rating as the third team from the Big Ten.

What didn't change was the placement of Ohio State. Yes, the Buckeyes choked away a 20-point lead at Texas but that doesn't change the overall perspective of them being the favorites in the Big Ten ahead of Indiana. Should they handle their business in the manner they did in the first 45 minutes in Austin then look for Ryan Day's team to be among the top seeds when Selection Sunday rolls around in December.
