Poor design, illegal guns among factors making SA taverns vulnerable to mass shootings, says criminologist - EWN

As police continue to investigate the mass shootings in Wedela in Gauteng and Lwandle in the Western Cape over the weekend, questions are being raised about why taverns so often become scenes of violence.

Why are South Africa’s taverns so vulnerable to gun attacks, CapeTalk's Lester Kiewit asked on Good Morning Cape Town on Tuesday.

According to University of KwaZulu-Natal criminologist Professor Nirmala Gopal, several factors could be at play, including the design of such establishments.

"The environmental design is quite poor, and it gives easy access to criminal gangs."
