TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto described the Indonesian national team's victory over Thailand in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup final as historic, noting that it might mark the first time Indonesia has emerged as champion in an international FIFA tournament match.

"I think it is a source of pride, and it serves as an example—an example of an unyielding spirit. We can succeed; this is likely the first time in history that we have won an international FIFA match," said Prabowo after watching the game at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta on Monday evening, October 5, 2026.

The Head of State also expressed his joy and gratitude for the efforts of the Indonesian players who secured the victory.

"Yes, we are happy, we are grateful, and we are proud of our team's efforts. They did not give up until the very last moments," the President said.

Indonesia emerged as champions after defeating Thailand 4–2 in a penalty shootout, following a 2–2 draw that persisted through extra time.

Indonesia took the lead through Dean James in the 84th minute. Thailand then equalized through Iklas Sanron in the 86th minute.

In extra time, Thailand took the lead through Peeradol Chamraratsame in the 111th minute. Indonesia leveled the score again through Elkan Baggott in the 114th minute.

In the penalty shootout, four Indonesian takers—Kevin Diks, Dean James, Elkan Baggott, and Shayne Pattynama—successfully converted their penalties.

Meanwhile, two Thai players—Sarach Yooyen and Nattaphon Sayriya—failed to score. Sarach's shot hit the post, while Sayriya's attempt was saved by Emil Audero. Indonesia ultimately secured the victory and clinched the championship title. After the match, President Prabowo and FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup trophy to the Indonesian national team captain, Kevin Diks, to mark their victory.

Prior to the trophy presentation, Prabowo and Infantino placed medals around the necks of the referees, the Thai players, and the Indonesian national team players as part of the victory celebration ceremony.

Prabowo was then seen joining in the celebration as Diks and the other Indonesian players lifted the trophy.
