PVR INOX fined Rs 75,000 for waste mixing, banned plastic use in Bengaluru

Bengaluru South City Corporation has imposed fines totalling more than Rs 1.25 lakh on PVR INOX and Forum Mall staff over alleged violations of solid waste management rules and improper disposal of waste.

Officials took action against the two establishments during separate inspections after finding alleged lapses in waste segregation and disposal.

Corporation officials inspected the PVR INOX outlet on Hosur Main Road in Lakkasandra Ward under the BTM Layout Assembly Constituency and found that wet and dry waste was allegedly not being segregated at source.

The inspection also found the establishment using banned single-use plastic items.

The civic body imposed a fine of Rs 75,000 on PVR INOX and recovered the amount on the spot. Of this, Rs 50,000 was levied for the alleged non-segregation and mixing of waste, while Rs 25,000 was imposed for the use of banned single-use plastics.

In a separate case, sewage treatment plant (STP) waste was allegedly dumped illegally near Shop Well Supermarket in Jayanagar Housing Society Layout on Uttarahalli-Kanakapura Main Road.

The action followed complaints from local residents, prompting corporation officials to inspect the site.

During the inspection, Forum Mall staff allegedly admitted that the dumped STP waste had originated from their establishment.

The corporation subsequently imposed and recovered a fine of Rs 50,839 from the Forum Mall staff.CIVIC BODY WARNS COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS

The Bengaluru South City Corporation directed commercial establishments to segregate wet and dry waste at source and ensure its scientific disposal.

Bengaluru South City Corporation Commissioner K N Ramesh warned that commercial establishments, malls, cinema theatres and hotels must strictly comply with Solid Waste Management regulations.

He said routine inspections would continue and legal action would be taken against establishments violating waste management rules or compromising cleanliness and environmental standards.
