SADAG says thousands reach out to it daily for mental health support - EWN
The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) said it receives up to 3,000 calls and more than 900 WhatsApp messages a day from people seeking mental health support.
The organisation said the high volume highlights the growing need for accessible mental health services in South Africa.
SADAG said the people reaching out are seeking help for issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, suicidal thoughts and grief.
As South Africa commemorates World Mental Health Month, SADAG said people experiencing these challenges should not feel they have to deal with them alone, and reaching out for support can be an important first step.
Statistics from the South African Federation for Mental Health indicate that the country records about 14,000 deaths from suicide each year.
