Safety alert: 2,500+ Toyota, Lexus and Jeep vehicles recalled - IOL

Over 2,000 Toyota Land Cruiser Prados are affected by this recall.

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) is recalling over 2,500 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Lexus GX, Lexus UX, and Jeep Grand Cherokee (WL) vehicles due to software errors. 

The recall comes after the NCC was notified by the respective suppliers. 

A total of 2,279 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado vehicles are being recalled. The NCC’s spokesperson, Phetho Ntaba, said Toyota SA Motors (PTY) Ltd informed it that vehicles made available from December 2023 to August 7, 2025, are affected. 

“The recall is due to a software error in the combination meter. During meter startup, the 3D graphics microcontroller unit may not fully initialise, resulting in a blank image in the 3D graphics area, which is part of the meter,” Ntaba said. 

In this condition, the indicators for engine oil pressure, engine coolant temperature, electrical charge, and other warning messages may not display on the combination meter. The affected units were sold nationally through Toyota dealerships.

The recall affected 255 vehicles, of which 251 units were sold nationwide from 2023 to 2025.

Ntaba said four of the vehicles are still with the manufacturer. 

“According to Stellantis South Africa, the Airbag Control Unit module on the affected modules may have been built with software that may cause transient door airbag pressure sensor faults to remain active for the lifetime of the sensor,” Ntaba said. 

This may result in delayed deployment of the Side Air Bag (SAB). A delayed deployment of the SAB may reduce front seat occupant protection in the event of certain types of crashes, potentially resulting in an increased risk of injury to motor vehicle occupants.

The Lexus GX is one of the vehicles affected by the recall.

Lexus SA Motors (PTY) Ltd has informed the NCC of a recall of Lexus GX and Lexus UX vehicles due to the airbag control unit module.

“According to Lexus, the module of the affected vehicles may have been built with software that may cause transient door airbag pressure sensor faults to remain active for the lifetime of the sensor,” Ntaba said. 

This may result in delayed deployment of the SAB. This may reduce front-seat occupant protection in the event of certain types of crashes, potentially resulting in an increased risk of injury to occupants of the vehicle.

The recall affects 41 vehicles that were made available from April 17, 2024, to September 8, 2025, and were sold nationally. 

“Consumers who own any of the affected vehicles are urged to immediately visit their nearest authorised dealership to arrange for an inspection and repair. Any corrective work relating to this recall will be carried out at no cost to the consumer,” Ntaba said.
