Scholar tasks mosques on marriage counselling - The Guardian Nigeria News

An Islamic scholar, Dr Harun Lafiagi, has raised concern at the increasing home break-ups and marriage collapse in Nigeria and called on every central mosque in the country to set up a counselling unit that would prioritise pre-marital, post-marital and general marital issues.

Speaking yesterday during the Kwara State annual imams conference at Ajase-Ipo, organised by the Ogun State-based Daarul-S Sa’aadah Islamic centre, Lafiagi urged religious leaders to wake up to their responsibilities to check the menace.

Lafiagi, who is the orator of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, also urged the chief imams of central mosques to regularly organise workshops or conferences for youths who are potential couples to keep them abreast of their roles and responsibilities to their partners.

Lamenting that most imams have deliberately abandoned the critical part of their primary societal roles, thereby leading to the collapse of many homes, he reminded them to always address societal ills, especially gambling, drug abuse, cultism, and other vices, in their Friday sermons and daily lectures.

Meanwhile, the sponsor of the event, Ramat Akansi, stated that the topic was informed by concern that many Muslim homes and marriages have been wrecked by societal influence; therefore, there is an urgent need to put the faithful on the right track.
