School registration, tuition fees may be linked

A proposal is under consideration to register private schools for four years with fees linked to their monthly tuition charges. According to the proposed regulations, schools charging monthly tuition fees of up to Rs1,500 would pay registration charges of Rs10,000 each. The chools charging up to Rs2,500 per month would be required to pay Rs20,000. A registration fee of Rs50,000 has been proposed for schools charging up to Rs5,000 per month and Rs100,000 for those with a monthly fee of up to Rs10,000. Under the proposed fee structure, schools charging Rs20,000 per month would pay a registration fee of Rs200,000. A fee of Rs1 million has been proposed for schools charging more than Rs20,000 per month. Sources said the schools would be registered for four years upon payment of the fees. For renewal of registration and issuance of a new licence, the schools would be required to pay 50 per cent of the registration fee, according to the proposal. A proposal seeking approval from the relevant cabinet committee for new rules and regulations governing the registration of private schools is also under consideration. The proposed registration procedures and revised fee structure would be implemented after approval by the relevant authorities.
