Severe thunderstorms expected to hit parts of South Africa on Tues

Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit parts of the country on Tuesday, with warnings of heavy rain, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for Gauteng, North West, parts of Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State and the Northern Cape.

The storms could cause localised flooding, damage to homes and dangerous conditions on the roads.

Partly cloudy and cool conditions are expected across much of the country, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers over the central and eastern parts.

SAWS warns that the strongest storms could bring heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning.

These conditions could lead to flooding of low-lying areas, bridges and flood-prone roads, while strong winds may topple trees and damage property.

Residents are urged to avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges, seek shelter during lightning, and secure loose outdoor items.

Motorists are also advised to reduce speeds and take extra care where heavy rain affects visibility.
