Smog hits twin cities before season

Even before the start of the smog season, the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, as well as Rawalpindi Division and major cities of the province, have started experiencing smog, prompting the Punjab government to take strict notice and order the Environment Protection and Climate Change Department, Regional Transport Authority, Civil Defence and district administrations to launch an immediate crackdown. The authorities have been directed to demolish or seal, from October 1, all brick kilns operating without environment-friendly zigzag technology, and take action against smoke-emitting vehicles and factories, as well as those burning garbage and tyres. At present, Islamabad's air quality index (AQI) has reached 101 and Rawalpindi's 97, while air pollution is being recorded at higher levels in Punjab ahead of the smog season. Lahore's overall AQI has reached around 210, falling in the unhealthy range, while different areas of the city are recording AQI levels between 207 and 210, placing it among the most polluted cities. In Rawalpindi, the current air pollution index is 97, which falls in the moderate category. Fluctuations in air quality are also being observed in Faisalabad, Rahim Yar Khan and other areas. At present, the AQI in Murree is 115, Attock 105, and Chakwal district 103. Under the pre-smog operation, the Punjab government and Environment Protection Department have intensified measures to prevent smog. A crackdown is under way against kilns operating without zigzag technology and industrial units causing pollution. Hotspots are being monitored round the clock through drone and night squads. Enforcement of the strict ban on burning crop residue and using or burning plastic has also been intensified, with challans and heavy fines being imposed for violations. Orders have also been issued for strict action against smoke-emitting vehicles, motorcycles, factories and bakeries.
