Son of NBA Hall-of-Fame center Hakeem Olujawon makes college commitment - USA Today
Before he began a hall of fame career in the NBA with the Houston Rockets, Hakeem Olajuwon was one of the nation's best college players during his time in the early 1980's with the Houston Cougars.
While he's still a proud Cougars alum, Olajuwon will be trading in those colors for a nearby rivals’ — at least for the foreseeable future thanks to one of his sons.
Malik Olajuwon, a 2027 four-star shooting guard at IMG Academy (FL), announced his commitment to SMU on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 1. He chose the Mustangs over Minnesota while also holding offers from programs like Auburn, Kansas State, Mississippi State, TCU, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
He becomes the Mustangs’ first commitment in their 2027 class. His commitment comes a week after he took an official visit to the school.
According to 247Sports, the 6-foot-4, 170-pounder is ranked as the No. 87 overall prospect in his class, the No. 8s hooting guard and No. 18 player out of Florida.
His older brother Aziz also played at IMG Academy last year and was a top 80 prospect in the 2026 class. He is currently enrolled at Stanford.
Malik had a productive summer on the Nike EYBL circuit doing a little bit of everything. He finished the summer averaging 12.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists to just 1.3 turnovers per game. He averaged six attempted three-pointers per game hitting at a clip of 31%.
