Steelers all-time scoring leader leads 2026 countdown to kickoff: Day No. 1 - Steelers Wire

Fans only need to wait 1 more day until the Steel City brand of football returns when the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Atlanta Falcons on September 13. In the spirit of the countdown to kickoff, we'll take a look at the most recent and best players ever to wear No. 1.

There isn't a No. 1 on Pittsburgh's roster, as the number has been unofficially retired out of respect for the greatest wearer in team history.

When it comes to No. 1 and the greatest wearer in franchise history, the honor belongs to Steelers kicker Gary Anderson.

Drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round of the 1982 NFL Draft, Anderson would be cut before the season started and was signed by the Steelers. Anderson would play 13 years for Pittsburgh, during which he made 416 extra points and 309 field goals for 1,343 points to become the Steelers' all-time leading scorer.

Anderson would also play for the Philadelphia Eagles (1995-1996), San Francisco 49ers (1997), Minnesota Vikings (1998-2002), and Tennessee Titans (2004). In 1998, he became the first-ever kicker to convert every field goal and extra point during a regular season. During his 23-year NFL career, Anderson was named First-Team All-Pro once, Second-Team All-Pro once, and earned four Pro Bowl selections.

For his excellence, Anderson was named to the Pittsburgh Steelers All-Time Team, the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team, and the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team. Although kicker Chris Boswell is on his heels for the Steelers' all-time leading scorer spot, the title of greatest No. 1 in team history belongs to Anderson.
