Stray dog bites 10 people in Angamaly

Ten people were bitten by a stray dog near Old Market Road in Angamaly on Friday night (September 25, 2026), after which they sought medical help at nearby hospitals. According to the Angamaly municipality authorities, the people escaped with minor injuries. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m.

According to municipality Vice-Chairperson Wilson Mundadan, the dog has been caught and is being kept in captivity under observation.

“The region has seen an increase in stray dogs because people tend to abandon their pet dogs on the streets. As per our estimate, there are about 600-700 stray dogs in the municipality. A few months ago, a similar incident occurred when a stray dog bit about 20 people. The municipality eventually gave them all monetary compensation,” said Mr. Mundadan.

He said that an anti-rabies vaccination drive was held earlier this year in the municipality. The local body has yet to start the Animal Birth Control Programme.

“We do not have a space to house the dogs after carrying out the surgery. We have already requested that the land near Angamaly Government Veterinary Hospital under the Ernakulam District Panchayat be allocated to us to build the necessary infrastructure to carry out the sterilisation activities,” said Mr. Mundadan.

Lathika Rajan, a member of the municipality Health Standing Committee, said that following the incident, the people sought help at the Government Taluk Hospital, Aluva; Government Medical College, Ernakulam; and a nearby private hospital. “No one has been badly hurt, and they all left the hospitals after receiving primary medical care,” said Ms. Rajan.
