A man has been rescued after falling down a 30-metre rock crevice at San Remo, about 120 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.

Emergency services were called to the coastal region after reports of a man falling and becoming trapped in a rock crevice off George Bass Coastal Walk about 2:10pm on Saturday.

Emergency crews were able to communicate with the 50-year-old, who told them he had broken his leg, but they struggled to gain access to him due to the difficult terrain and rising tide. 

An Ambulance Victoria helicopter was called in, with other personnel from Fire Rescue Victoria, Country Fire Authority, the State Emergency Service (SES), Air Wing, Search and Rescue Squad, Life Saving Victoria and Water Police working together to rescue the man.

Search and Rescue officers finally entered the crevice to assess him, and the man was winched to safety about 5:30pm.

He was flown to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
