BANGKOK -- Torrential rains brought parts of Bangkok to a near standstill last weekend, turning the Thai capital's streets into rivers and forcing residents to wade through waist-deep water.
The downpours inundated neighborhoods across the sprawling capital and surrounding areas, disrupting daily life and transportation and leaving some communities under deep floodwater.
As the water gradually receded, the disruption spread elsewhere. At Suvarnabhumi International Airport, staff shortages caused by the flooding hampered ground operations, contributing to flight delays and leaving thousands of checked bags stranded. Some arriving passengers waited more than a day to retrieve their luggage, while suitcases piled up in baggage claim areas.
