TMC Mamata camp clashes with BJP workers in Kolkata over party office occupation
Clashes broke out between workers of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress faction and the BJP in Kolkata’s Mukundapur on Tuesday, prompting police to resort to lathicharge to bring the situation under control. The confrontation followed a procession by the Trinamool faction over its allegation that a party office had been forcibly occupied.
The trouble began shortly after the procession started in the afternoon, when workers from the two sides reportedly got involved in a scuffle. Police intervened and used lathicharge as tensions escalated.
The Trinamool faction alleged that its workers were attacked during the incident. Its members said they were marching to seek the recovery of their party office and submit a formal representation to the authorities.
They further alleged that eggs were thrown at women workers, including youth leader Upasana Chowdhury, and accused BJP workers of attempting to attack them.
A video of the incident showed utter commotion in the streets with both rival groups clashing and the cops were seen using canes to disperse the crowd.
Chowdhury alleged that several workers were injured and admitted to hospital. "Our workers were injured and hospitalised. Women were knocked down and beaten. My ornament was pulled and I was physically assaulted. I do not come from a background where I would lift my clothes to show the extent of the abuse I suffered".
The BJP disputed the allegations, claiming instead that one of its workers was assaulted while filming the procession.
BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar said, "A BJP worker was passing by the procession when he was grabbed and beaten up." He alleged that the Mamata Trinamool faction was making false accusations.
The clash comes amid an intensifying political confrontation between the rival camps in West Bengal, including disputes over party offices and organisational control. The two sides have also traded allegations over issues involving Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee’s office on Camac Street.
