According to a report by TVP World, Poland’s public broadcaster, train engineers across Poland are driving trains at 20 kilometers per hour at level crossings as part of a protest they have launched.

As of 7:00 a.m. local time, only 70 percent of trains were running on schedule, while 14 train services were canceled.

PKP PLK, Poland’s state-owned railway infrastructure operator, announced that as of 8:00 a.m., total train delays had exceeded 5,000 minutes.

PKP Intercity, Poland’s main long-distance train operator, stated that as of 6:45 a.m., 47 of its 140 trains were running late, with a total delay of 1,225 minutes and an average delay of 26 minutes per train.

Leszek Mietek, President of the Polish Railway Engineers’ Union, warned in a statement that the protest would cause delays, saying, “It is better to have these delays for one day than to have more people die on Polish railways.”

The unions stated that they are expecting “concrete decisions and real action” from the government. The train operators’ protest is expected to end this afternoon.

On September 9 in Poland, a passenger train collided with a truck at a level crossing, resulting in one death and 20 injuries.
