President Donald Trump has claimed that voting in the U.S. is “corrupt” in a late-night rant on Truth Social, coming less than a month before the American public goes to the polls for the midterms.
Invoking Brazil’s election, currently being contested between President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of Lula’s predecessor and Trump ally Jair Bolsonaro, Trump wrote: “125 Million People voted today in the first round of Brazil’s Presidential Election.
“The results came out shortly after the vote closed, on the SAME DAY! In Detroit, Philadelphia, California, and numerous other U.S. Cities and States, the results, with much smaller numbers, will often take weeks to Rig, I mean, calculate. Voting in America is CORRUPT!!!”
The post pinned to the top of Trump’s feed at the time of writing was a video of him repeating his pledge that U.S. adults will receive $5,000 checks if Republicans hang onto control of Congress in next month’s vote, a promise that has led to accusations against the president that he is attempting to swing the outcome.
Polling has routinely suggested that Democrats are on course to win back the House of Representatives in November and potentially the Senate too, with Republicans dragged down by the president’s dire approval ratings and ongoing disquiet about inflation and the Iran war.
Earlier Sunday, the president betrayed his own anxiety about the vote when he wrote in another post: “The Polls have ALWAYS underestimated MAGA. They try to suppress the Vote, but I won all 7 Swing States, the Popular Vote, 86% of Counties, and 99% of Primaries this year. I AM ON THE BALLOT!”
Trump has long insisted his defeat in the 2020 presidential election was only achieved by fraud – a vast, nationwide conspiracy designed to bring Joe Biden to power – but has never been able to prove his claims.
He lost multiple court cases attempting to argue the point in the immediate aftermath of the vote, stoking an atmosphere of misguided grievance that culminated in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 by a mob of his supporters seeking to stop lawmakers certifying the results from the states.
Reports by both the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security subsequently concluded that there was “no evidence of fraud or interference that changed the outcome” – which were even cited by Trump’s own AI-powered government chatbot last week before it was “fixed” to correct its answers – but the president has never been able to let the matter drop.
Most recently, he delivered a primetime address to the nation from the Oval Office in July in which he alleged that China, aided by “deep state” operatives in Washington, had attempted to engineer his loss six years ago, again without providing credible evidence.
Despite Trump’s repeated failure to make the charge stick, concerns about broader corruption in the U.S. appear to be shared by the vast majority of Americans. An overwhelming 90 percent of Americans told Gallup pollsters this summer they believe government corruption is widespread.
Elsewhere on Truth Social Sunday, the president posted several pictures of his recent meeting with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, a number of memes trolling Greenland, a post from Elon Musk about the potential of “super intelligence” and a further complaint about the Kennedy Center falling into a state of disrepair.
