Trump scoffs at AI danger warnings as Carney calls for global tech body to strengthen guardrails - National Post

“There’s a need for coordination,” Carney said in an interview with Bloomberg News on Monday. “Ultimately, a technology stability board, in our view, along the lines of the Financial Stability Board would make sense.”

“It’s an opportunity — and I think ultimately what it’s going to mean is greater value creation and greater value delivery to people.”

The leaders of major AI labs, including Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei, have said development of the most advanced systems must be slowed in order to prevent AI slipping beyond human control and inflicting catastrophic harm. Other AI industry leaders, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman and SpaceXAI’s Elon Musk, concurred with Amodei’s calls for a slowdown.

But U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed calls for artificial intelligence guardrails and slammed Amodei for urging a slowdown in the technology’s development.

In a Monday social media post, Trump blamed a “SICK conspiracy” for voter backlash on AI data centres and increased concern about frontier models, adding that “the only one that is happy about it is China.”

“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!” Trump posted. “We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so. Conspiracy Theorists, Treasonists, Traitors, and Leakers, BEWARE!”

Trump said in a subsequent post that the idea that AI would destroy humanity is a “HOAX” and that the development of the technology “will not be stopped by brilliantly run Destructive Forces during the Term of President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
