Trump, Xi wrap up summit in Washington

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have wrapped up a summit in Washington. The meeting on Thursday was their second face-to-face talks this year, following Trump's visit to Beijing in May.

Prior to the summit, Trump welcomed Xi to the White House for a ceremony. This is the Chinese leader's first trip to the United States since 2023.

Trump said: "During this visit, we will also discuss pressing issues concerning security, technology, and super intelligence, SI. The decisions we make in these areas today can promote peace and prosperity for decades and decades to come."

Xi said: "China and the US have different national characteristics, but through candid, in-depth and continued dialogue, we can understand each other better and seek common ground while shelving differences and building mutual trust."

The leaders then sat down for the summit in the Oval Office.

The Chinese foreign ministry later released a statement.

It said both sides agreed to continue dialogue on the issue of artificial intelligence and prevent abuse of the technology. It added that they exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East, the conflict in Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula.

The statement notes Xi expressed hope that the US would uphold the "correct" view of opposing "Taiwan independence."

Trump was asked by reporters multiple questions after the summit, including whether they discussed the issue of Taiwan. He simply said that they had a "great meeting."
