Truth Social users rip Trump after he claims gas prices were higher under Biden than today
President Donald Trump is facing backlash from his own social media base after he said that fuel costs were “much higher” under his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden as the cost of his war in Iran continues to hurt Americans.
“Gas prices were much higher under Biden than under “TRUMP.” So were almost all other prices,” the president claimed in a Truth Social post Sunday night.
But the president was criticized by some followers in his Truth Social echo chamber, who said that gas prices in their states were the highest they’d ever experienced amid his war in Iran.
The Great Lakes region is among the hardest hit, with Gas Buddy analyst Patrick De Haan describing “eye-watering increases.”
“Not in Michigan, liar,” a Truth Social follower replied to Trump. “The highest it went was $4.49 a gallon. It's $4.99 now.”
“I have never paid more for gas than I did today.. and I’m 61 live in Michigan,” said another.
“I disagree. Gas prices in Tennessee are the highest I’ve seen,” someone else replied to the president.
“Nope, gas and food prices are higher now, and diesel is much worse,” added another.
Republicans Against Trump responded to the president’s claim by comparing average gas prices today with when Biden left office in January 2025.
“FACT CHECK: False,” the group said in a post on X. “When Joe Biden left office, regular gas averaged about $3.11 a gallon and diesel about $3.72. Today, gas is $4.48 and diesel is $6.51.”
Overall, average gas prices under Biden — who was in office during the COVID-19 pandemic and when Russia launched its full-scale invasion in Ukraine in February 2022 — were higher on average, but not “much higher” as Trump claimed.
Prices peaked at $5.01 per gallon under Biden as the Russian and Ukrainian conflict triggered a global energy crisis in June 2022.
Today, the average price of gas under Trump has soared to $4.48 per gallon, while diesel is at $6.50, according to AAA.
Under Trump’s second term so far, gas prices averaged $3.35 a gallon compared to $3.46 in Biden’s full term, the Center for Economic and Policy Research noted.
The organization warned in an article last month that if gas prices don’t come down, “Trump will soon be able to boast of having higher gas prices on average than Joe Biden.”
Gas prices are currently more than 35 percent higher than they were at this time in 2024, when Trump promised to bring down costs on the presidential campaign trail, according to analysis by Yahoo Finance.
With seven weeks to go until the midterm elections, affordability remains the most important issue for voters.
Trump has tried to reassure voters that prices will come “tumbling down” after the midterms, and that the cost is a “very inexpensive price to pay” for stopping Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
But Republican operatives have expressed concern and warned the Trump administration not to downplay the matter.
“Gas prices matter because they’re one of the few economic indicators voters experience and see in real time,” veteran Republican strategist Chris Wilson told the Associated Press.
“The price is literally staring them in the face several times a week. So I wouldn’t minimize the frustration we’re seeing, particularly among working- and middle-class voters,” he added.
Other GOP operatives have said they believe that the president’s supporters understand his actions on Iran.
“I think the president understands that there is pain at the pump for the American people,” a GOP operative told The Hill. “But I also think a large share of our voters understand why he’s doing what he’s doing in Iran. National security is a key part of his platform and the Republican agenda.”
