US woman filmed carrying baby, 3 plates of food at game breaks silence on viral clip

A woman who was filmed carrying her baby and three plates of food back to her seat at a San Francisco Giants game while her husband appeared to sit by without helping has finally explained what was really happening off camera.

The clip had gone viral after viewers praised the woman for juggling her baby and food while criticising the man beside her for seemingly leaving her to manage everything herself. Some even called him a “worthless husband” and urged the woman to leave him.

But the woman at the centre of the viral moment has now spoken out, revealing that the scene looked very different from what viewers assumed.

Writing in a Substack post titled, “I’m the mom in that viral Giants clip. Let me tell you about my husband."

Erika, the woman, introduced her husband as Ramses and their baby as Anastasia. She said the two had been together for nine years and were raising “two under two” together.

As Erica explained in her post, she had gone to the restroom during the Giants game and had decided to keep Anastasia with her rather than leave the baby with Ramses. While she was away, she texted him a photo of the food menu and offered to pick something up because she was already passing by.

She returned with brisket sandwiches and loaded fries, carrying Anastasia in a baby carrier. Erika said Ramses moved her jacket to clear her seat, greeted their daughter and asked whether she wanted to eat first.

She told him to go ahead because she had already eaten before the game and knew he had not had a proper meal that day. She also said he offered to take the food containers from her lap, but she declined because she was comfortable holding them and wanted to keep them off the stadium floor.

She added that Ramses even offered to hand-feed her and share his sandwich before she told him to enjoy his meal.

“So he ate, as I had told him,” she wrote.

The original broadcast had taken a very different view of the moment. Giants broadcasters Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper noticed Erika on camera and jokingly dubbed her “mom of the year," while speculating about what Ramses might have been saying to her.

The clip then spread across social media, with viewers filling in the conversation they could not hear and assuming that Ramses was refusing to help his wife.

Erica, however, said that was not the case.

“I understand how it looked on television. But we could hear each other. The announcers and audience couldn’t,” she wrote.

She also revealed that there was another reason she had wanted to make the evening about Ramses. He had recently lost one of his oldest friends, a baseball player he had known since childhood, and Erika said he had been quietly grieving the loss.

She had suggested the Giants game as a way for him to remember his friend, giving him a chance to watch baseball, eat some food and have some space to process what had happened.

“The camera showed what I was carrying in my hands. It couldn’t show what he was carrying that night,” Erika wrote.

The mother also pushed back against the idea that the viral clip reflected the way their household normally worked. She said she and Ramses both changed diapers, took their children to medical appointments and shared bedtime responsibilities.

She recalled that after she lost her job shortly before their daughter was born, Ramses took on additional financial responsibilities while also supporting her through complications after childbirth and postpartum depression, stress and anxiety.

She said he had since worked to make it possible for her to stay home with their children while he handled the family's bills and helped oversee work on their new home.

For Erika, that was precisely why she wanted people to stop treating a few seconds of footage as a complete picture of their marriage.

“Going viral has shown me firsthand that we have become quick to vilify people from a brief clip,” she wrote, adding that viewers could see her hands were full but could not hear Ramses offering to help or know that she had chosen to let him eat.

She also addressed the people who had gone beyond criticism and sent abusive messages to her husband, saying some had even told him to kill himself.

“My husband is a father, a son, and a person deeply loved by people who know who he truly is,” she wrote.

Erika said she appreciated people praising her as “mom of the year,” but argued that supporting her also meant believing her when she explained her own relationship.

“You can appreciate what I was doing that night without assuming I have to do everything alone,” she wrote, concluding her post.
