Vendors Protest Sunter Podomoro Market Revitalization Fees, Pramono: I Will Investigate

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung spoke out about the protest by dozens of Sunter Podomoro Market vendors who demonstrated at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (31/8/2026) to oppose the market's revitalization plan.

Pramono explained that the market revitalization efforts in Jakarta generally follow the same approach, involving collaboration between Perumda Pasar Jaya and the vendors.

According to him, an agreement must be reached before the revitalization takes place.

“For Podomoro, the treatment is actually the same. In all areas where we conduct revitalization, it is certainly done through cooperation between Pasar Jaya and the vendors, and there must be an agreement on that,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday.

Regarding the vendors’ protest at Sunter Podomoro Market, Pramono said he would look into the matter further.

“So if there is a demonstration, later I will investigate the issue at Podomoro,” he added.

Earlier, dozens of vendors affiliated with the Sunter Podomoro Market Association staged a rally in front of Jakarta City Hall in Central Jakarta on Monday (31/8/2026).

Based on Kompas.com observations at the scene, the vendors held their demonstration in front of City Hall on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan from around 11:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time.

They gathered in front of City Hall’s gate and used a loudspeaker truck bearing the message “Stop Revitalization! Don’t Use Vendors’ Money!”.

The chairman of the Sunter Podomoro Market Association, Sutanto, said vendors were asked to pay tens of millions of rupiah per square meter for stalls after the market’s revitalization.

For stalls on the ground floor, vendors were charged Rp 49 million per square meter, while stalls upstairs cost Rp 39 million per square meter. These prices exclude value-added tax (PPN).

“This revitalization means the prices imposed on vendors are very illogical. The price for upstairs stalls is Rp 39 million per square meter, and the ground floor is Rp 49 million per square meter, excluding VAT,” Sutanto said in front of Jakarta City Hall on Monday.

With these prices, vendors have to pay hundreds of millions of rupiah to obtain a new stall.

Sutanto illustrated that a ground floor stall of about 4 square meters can cost more than Rp 200 million.

Meanwhile, an upstairs stall of around 2.16 square meters is estimated to cost Rp 85 million.
