We drive the Jaecoo J5: Light on price, but also on steering power - EWN

Motoring journo Melinda Ferguson has been driving the 2026 Jaecoo J5 all around Cape Town.

Compared to the J7, Ferguson describes this model as the cheaper, more affordable version of the car from the Chinese brand (owned by Chery).

In its segment, the compact SUV goes up against competitors the likes of the Toyota Corolla Cross, Haval Jolion Pro, Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Ferguson notes that the Jaecoo J5's good looks are crafted by former Mercedes-Benz designer Chris Rhoades.

"The Chinese carmakers have been poaching the top German-employed designers, and they're being paid a fortune in China. But it's not just a straight carbon copy - they are developing a new design language."

The petrol version of the J5 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 115 kW and 230 Nm.

While she's not enthused by this engine, particularly in windy Cape Town, Ferguson acknowledges that it is also used by other big brands in this segment.

"It felt like the steering was too light. I didn't feel well planted, particularly when the wind was blowing. It was okay on gravel, but I think it was made more for light lifestyle kind of driving."
