Starbucks closed about 250 locations in the United States and Canada last week.

Starbucks Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams wrote in a public letter that the coffee chain closes locations each year, and the recent closures represent about 1% of Starbucks' more than 18,000 North America coffeeshops.

Grams said while most locations are thriving under the chain's Back to Starbucks strategy − implemented by CEO Brian Niccol in 2024 − some are underperforming.

"We’re making this decision for a simple reason: We want every Starbucks coffeehouse to be a place customers love and partners are proud to work," Grams wrote in his letter.

Here's what we know about the shuttered locations.

USA TODAY reached out to Starbucks multiple times for a list of the store closures. Starbucks told USA TODAY customers could find signage on doors of closed locations and check the Starbucks store locator and mobile app to see if a location remains open.

USA TODAY compiled the following list by verifying closures reported by starbuckseverywhere.net. The addresses were cross-checked by searching for the stores on Starbucks' store locator (which indicated that online ordering was not available at closed locations) and identifying permanently closed businesses on Google and Yelp.
