Whistleblower who linked Lutnick to Epstein kills self. Another mysterious death?
Simon Andriesz, a former senior employee at Wall Street brokerage company BGC Partners, uncovered evidence of business links between its then-CEO and current US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Andriesz was found dead in Thailand last month. The BBC reported that his family said he had taken his own life on September 23 and that there was no suggestion of foul play. He is, however, not the first person connected to the Epstein case to have died.
Epstein, the American financier and convicted sex offender, died on August 10, 2019, while awaiting trial on federal charges of sex trafficking minors. His death was ruled a suicide. But while Epstein now lies interred in a nameless crypt in Palm Beach, Florida, questions continue to surround the true nature and extent of his activities. How extensive was his trafficking operation? How was he able to maintain ties with some of the world's most powerful individuals? What happened to the evidence collected by investigators over the years? And how many others knew about, enabled or helped expose his activities?
Much of what is known about Epstein's crimes has emerged through the work of investigators and the testimony of survivors, whistle-blowers and former associates. In recent years, however, several people connected to the case have died, including some from natural causes and others by suicide, with Andriesz becoming the latest entry in the list.
According to the BBC, Simon Andriesz, a former senior executive at BGC Partners, provided the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with information about the undeclared business ties between its then CEO, now US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Jeffrey Epstein. Andriesz later uncovered a 2018 email exchange between Lutnick and Epstein concerning Adfin, a company in which both had investments.
He subsequently provided information about Lutnick's dealings with Epstein to the US House Oversight Committee. His disclosures forced Lutnick to admit his relationship with Epstein at a congressional panel in the US, while having to retract his previous claims that he had cut ties with the convicted sex offender years earlier.
Andriesz died in Thailand on September 23, aged 57. His family later told the BBC that he had died by suicide and that there was no suggestion of foul play.
Virginia Giuffre, meanwhile, was one of Epstein's most prominent accusers and among the women whose testimony helped expose his abuse and relationships with powerful associates.
According to Reuters, Giuffre said she was recruited by Ghislaine Maxwell when she was 16 and was subsequently sexually abused and trafficked by Epstein. She later became a prominent public voice in exposing Epstein's activities and his links to powerful figures.
Giuffre also accused Maxwell and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew of the UK's House of Windsor, of involvement in her abuse. She filed a civil lawsuit against Andrew in 2021, alleging that he had sexually abused her as a teenager after she had been trafficked by Epstein and Maxwell. Andrew denied the allegations and settled the case in 2022 without admitting liability, Reuters reported.
Giuffre died in Western Australia on April 25, 2025, aged 41. Her family said she had taken her own life, while Reuters reported that police found no evidence of foul play.EPSTEIN CASE'S INVESTIGATORS, ASSOCIATES AND SURVIVORS WHO HAVE DIED
While Giuffre and Andriesz died by suicide, several other people connected to Epstein have also died over the years. They include investigators, survivors, lawyers and associates, but their causes of death vary widely.
Joseph Recarey, a Palm Beach Police detective who led the 2005 investigation into Epstein, helped build the case against him by interviewing victims and gathering evidence that led to the latter's conviction on prostitution charges in 2008, the Miami Herald reported. Recarey died in May 2018, aged 50, after a brief illness.
Epstein's former household manager, Alfredo Rodriguez, also became entangled in the case after obtaining his so-called "Little Black Book" (which, according to a New York Times report, contained details on the girls who gave Epstein massages) and attempting to sell it to an undercover FBI agent for $50,000, according to The Independent. Rodriguez died in December 2014, aged 60, from mesothelioma.
Two prominent lawyers involved in Epstein's 2008 defence have also died. Kenneth Starr, who represented Epstein during negotiations that helped him avoid serious federal sex trafficking charges, died in September 2022, aged 76, from complications following surgery, The Texas Tribune reported. Roy Black, another member of Epstein's defence team, died at his Florida home on July 21, 2025, aged 80, after battling a serious illness.
Steven Hoffenberg, a convicted Ponzi schemer who was once a mentor to Epstein, was found dead in his Connecticut flat in August 2022, aged 77. The Daily Beast reported that investigators found no signs of trauma or foul play and believed he died of natural causes.
At least two other women who said they were victims of Epstein have died. Carolyn Andriano, who testified against Ghislaine Maxwell at her 2021 sex trafficking trial, died in May 2023, aged 36, from an accidental drug overdose, the Miami Herald reported. Leigh "Skye" Patrick, who said Epstein abused her when she was 16, died from an accidental drug overdose in Florida in 2018, aged 29.
Others who had connections to Epstein's wider network have also died. French modelling agent Jean-Luc Brunel, a longtime Epstein associate who was accused of supplying girls to him, was found hanged in his Paris prison cell on February 19, 2022, aged 75. He was awaiting trial on allegations including rape of minors and trafficking minors for sexual exploitation.
Film producer Steve Bing, who had been in contact with the FBI about Epstein, died by suicide after falling from a Los Angeles building on June 22, 2020, aged 55, according to the Los Angeles Times. Thomas Bowers, a former Deutsche Bank executive whose division handled Epstein's accounts, died by suicide at his Malibu home in November 2019, aged 55. However, no evidence has established that either death was connected to Epstein.
The long list of people linked to Jeffrey Epstein who have died may seem striking at first glance. That said, there is no evidence suggesting that these deaths are connected or part of a coordinated effort to silence people associated with Epstein. Nevertheless, the circumstances surrounding their deaths make for intriguing reading, particularly against the backdrop of the unanswered questions surrounding Epstein's network and activities.- Ends(Written by Shounak Sanyal)
