Why do you still need to purchase a 'paper' newspaper?

When I was living in the UK and then the US in the 90s, Sunday newspapers were massive. Especially in the US where they could weigh pounds. Then we had local newspapers focused on their parent city, like the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which I subscribed to. On top of that, our own University of Washington had a daily print newspaper called The Daily and it was free. Every morning before we got up, it was delivered to our doors at the university residences. It was run by the students at the university and had a great legacy too. Over the years technology improved, the internet boomed, and now news was available for free. As access to the internet and mobile devices became widespread, the market for paper newspapers collapsed completely. Now print circulation has dropped nearly 80% in the last twenty years. According to the 'State of Local News report', one-third of all US newspapers from 2005 have now vanished and only 20% of remaining US newspapers are printed daily. That means massive drops in revenue for print newspapers and more than a 75% reduction of newsroom staff in the USA alone. But why should we care as technology always makes a few professions redundant? New opportunities for better services originated from that dust. So why does it matter that there is an evolution in an industry making some people redundant? We need to care because this shift is making us redundant. In the era of newspapers everyone had a chance to have at least a look at every news published on that paper. In most developing countries where newspapers had few pages, people knew a lot more about global affairs because it was published on the same eight pages alongside movie news. Similarly, even if you only liked sports, you would also read about ongoing politics in the country because it was published on the same pages. You may like a political party, but you would read about the opposing views on the same page. So, the result was that newspaper readers were much more well-informed not only about their interests but also about what else was going on around them. Unfortunately, with technology leap and AI progress that is not possible. Many world-famous newspaper digital sites now show you a personalised front page based on your preferences and your reading habits. This is a news bubble created just for you, which will confirm your biases and act as an echo chamber. You will think that everyone else thinks like you and you will not understand views held by other people. This is done by using very sophisticated algorithms. Not only is this happening on newspaper sites but much more so on social media sites, where you are just watching those who have similar views. Today's generation is growing up in an environment where they are not intellectually being challenged. Throughout the twentieth century every new generation improved the average IQ score by 3 points. For the first time in our history the newest generation has reversed the trend; Generation Z is trailing in comprehension, reading and sustained attention. Reading an actual "paper" newspaper in the morning gives you a window on the world. It still could have its own biases, but it is much better to show you the whole world and not just a magnified slice of the world you like to see. Make sure you read a daily newspaper and ask your children to do so too. Don't ask them to read the whole paper, ask them just to read the headlines. Even that will help them to understand the world in full colour and not through their narrow and filtered lens of algorithms. Today there is a real apprehension that AI will completely surpass human intelligence and may become a threat to human existence in around ten years. We need to retrain our brains and starting with a print newspaper could be the first step in this direction. It's not about the careers of some journalists and newspaper businesses; it is about improving our own odds for the epic conflict we may see in the near future. Start reading a "paper" newspaper for your own survival.
