Will ride again, but I'll be scared: Gurugram hit-and-run survivor speaks out

A woman biker injured after a speeding car rammed her motorcycle on Gurugram's Golf Course Road says she is scared to ride again, but does not intend to give up biking.

“I will be able to ride a bike, but I will be scared. I will be scared of going out alone on the road. Even going in a group will make me nervous. I’ll be scared to ride on the roads of Gurugram and Delhi,” she told Aaj Tak, India Today's sister channel, during an interview.

Sia was out on a Sunday ride when a white sedan, driven by Kalyan Bainsla, who was arrested in Rajasthan today, began following her and repeatedly drove close to her motorcycle. The collision was captured on an action camera mounted on her superbike, and the video has since gone viral on social media.

During the interview, Sia said she became suspicious when the occupants of the car began gesturing at her and asking her to stop. She said she also suspected that they may have been drinking.

“I was trying to stay a little ahead of them because I was scared. The way they were driving, they were repeatedly bringing their car close to my bike at high speed, and I was afraid that they might hit me and make me fall,” she said.

Sia said she tried to create distance between herself and the car, hoping that other vehicles would come between them.

“I thought that if I could get a little ahead of them, there would be three or four cars in between us, and they wouldn’t be able to cross them, so they would fall behind,” she said.

However, she claimed that the car continued to follow her.

When she reached a turn and another vehicle came into the area, Sia said she moved to the side. The sedan then approached at high speed, cut across and rammed her motorcycle before speeding away.

Sia said the episode was “extremely traumatising and scary”, especially for women who ride motorcycles and for those who travel by bike.

“I couldn’t understand what exactly they were thinking or trying to convey. Whether they were trying to show off because they were men and I was a woman, or whether they were trying to scare me—I really couldn’t understand what they were trying to do,” she said.

Sia has been riding motorcycles for about a year. She said she does not belong to any particular riding group and sometimes rides alone or with her cousin, who also owns a bike.

She said the community of women bikers remains relatively small, with riders generally knowing one another.

The Gurugram Police added the attempt to murder section to the FIR today after Sia’s family alleged that the accused had not been arrested despite video evidence of the incident and that the charge had not been included initially.

While speaking to reporters earlier, Sia slammed Gurugram Police, saying that law and order was not in place in the city. She claimed that traffic police are normally quick to penalise bikers but far too lenient when it comes to four-wheeler drivers.
