Woman killed, 13 injured in three-taxi crash in Cape Town - IOL

A 60-year-old woman was killed and 13 people injured when three minibus taxis collided on Nelson Mandela Boulevard in Cape Town on Monday.

Cape Town traffic spokesperson Kevin Jacobs said the collision, which occurred before the Browning Road turn-off, was reported at 7.52am.

"[We] can confirm a multi-vehicle collision on Nelson Mandela Boulevard inbound before Browning Road earlier today," Jacobs said.

"A 60-year-old woman was declared deceased [at the] scene.

"Three other people sustained serious injuries and 10 more were treated for slight injuries.

"The left lane remains obstructed at this time."

Nelson Mandela Boulevard is the main route into the Cape Town City Centre from the N2 and carries the bulk of the morning commuter traffic into the city bowl.

The crash came less than nine hours after one of the worst road disasters on a Western Cape road this year.

Twenty-one people were killed when three vehicles collided on the N1 in the Klein Karoo on Sunday night.

Western Cape's traffic department said 21 people died in a crash involving three vehicles on the N1 between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, and that three other people were seriously injured.

The collision happened at about 11.30pm.
